Director J.J. Abrams talks about one of the big mysteries surrounding The Force Awakens and we’ve got the details right now on Clevver Newsfeed. Everyone is asking where Luke Skywalker is, but the real question seems to be “Who is he?” As you’re probably aware by now, the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly has tons of new Star Wars The Force Awakens information and the newest info has to do with Luke Skywalker. Outside of a leaked photo that the studio quickly began pulling down and a quick shot of his robotic hand and voice in one of the trailers, we have yet to see Luke appear anywhere in the film’s marketing. While some fans have gone so far as to think it’s because he won’t actually appear in the film, director J.J. Abrams says that is not the case explaining quote, “No one forgot about him! We were hoping people would care, but there are a lot of things that are not on the poster, as busy as the poster is. Certainly Luke is a very important aspect of the story.” Obviously, any reveal of Luke would spoil the movie, but his absence in the film’s marketing could be a clever way to put the fans in the same position as the characters on the screen. We want to know where Luke is just as much as they do. Of course one theory is that Luke has turned to the Dark Side and while the theory that he’s actually new villain “Kylo Ren” can be debunked pretty easily, him now being evil is a bit harder. After all, the one shot of him we have seen, he’s shrouded in a dark cloak which kind of screams “Evil!” It also doesn’t help that an episode of Dinner For Five recently began circulating that shows Mark Hamill talking about the desire to have turned to the Dark Side in Return of the Jedi with Abrams sitting across from him, taking it in. We’ll of course have to wait until December 18th to discover where exactly Luke Skywalker is, but the real question we should be asking is “WHO is he?” This is the question that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy asked Abrams that ultimately made him agree to direct the new film. We of course know him as the hero of the original trilogy, but according to John Boyega, who plays former Stormtrooper “Finn” in the film, a good portion of the Star Wars universe either thinks of him as a villain or a myth saying quote, “He’s been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it’s like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?” Like most of The Force Awakens, Boyega’s connection to Luke remains a mystery, but we do know he somehow gets his hands on Luke’s lightsaber that was lost in The Empire Strikes Back and it will play an important role in the film and likely answer both questions; where is Luke is and who is he? So we have to ask, where do you think Luke is and do you think he’s turned to the Dark Side? Share your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @ClevverMovies and then click here to find out what 7 things we think need to happen in the movie.
