For more than two decades the owner of the Oakland warehouse where 36 people died in a fire had a business license. City officials confirmed that firefighters who were supposed to inspect city businesses never checked up on the building though. A spokeswoman for the city of Oakland announced on Friday that the current building own had a license with the city and had paid all of his business taxes. The revelation of a business license points to “apparent communication breakdowns among city officials regarding a cluttered warehouse illegally converted to living space and an entertainment venue that was the target of complaints by neighbors and former residents.”
