Marketing Minute 003: “Is Political Marketing Necessary?” (Political Branding) #MarketingMinute

Every election season, viewers get frustrated over the amount and nature of political advertising that occurs in print, radio, television, and now, social media. Is all this political marketing necessary?

Let’s consider the concept of branding to figure this one out.

Marketing communications are supposed to be designed to provide message recipients with the right information at the right time and in the right manner to help those message recipients to make the *right* decision… from the perspective of the marketer, that is.

However, most marketing managers of well-known brands understand that the organization no longer controls the brand. Instead, the community does.

What this means, is that the collective social media conversation can influence your brand much more than your own marketing efforts.

And in the case of an individual social media post that has the ingredients to go viral, the impact on your brand could be the result of only one person’s initial communication.

So what can a political brand do to combat social media influence? Market his or her brand via political advertising, public relations, and a communications campaign that aligns with the overall marketing strategy of the brand.

Without solid marketing, your brand is completely at the mercy of the masses, and that’s not always the best place to be.
