“A South Jersey couple who emigrated to the U.S. from Mexico three decades ago has been deported by authorities.
Oscar and Humberta Campos of Bridgeton left on a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport early Friday morning.
Efforts to allow the couple to stay in the U.S. were led by longtime friends, elected officials including U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, and even the bishop of the Diocese of Camden.
But despite those efforts, federal immigration officials Thursday denied their request for work visas to remain in the U.S.
“Senator Booker’s office worked for months with the Campos family and federal officials on this case. We are extremely disappointed that ICE has denied the request for a stay of removal and saddened to see another family needlessly torn apart,” said Thomas Pietrykoski, Booker’s spokesman.”*
